I have been working with a band recently, providing lyrics (more on that soon) but here are the lyrics to “The Hammer by the Window”
The Hammer by the Window
Chorus-
The black cat that’s our sentry
Has run away I think
Our big dog’s bark is empty
As his courage starts to sink
The flowers in the garden have died from lack of light
And the hammer by the window can’t keep us safe tonight.
Verse one-
Something big is crashing at the window
Or many smaller things
Terrifying spectres that still call to be let in
And you hear them in your heart
No matter how far away you run
What is past forgiving
And what is not yet done
Middle eight-
It’s still true, though not written, sung or spoken
Sometimes we’re not stronger in places that we’re broken
Verse two-
We paint marks on every window
Magic signs on every door
Though we have forgotten what we placed them there for
Bees and bats and hornets
And stronger, angrier things
Change all in just one instant
If it’s dark
and the doorbell rings
Middle eight-
It’s still true, though not written, sung or spoken
Sometimes we’re not stronger in places that we’re broken
